Lykiardopoulos Mansion
The Lykiardopoulos Mansion, on Amalia Avenue at the junction with Tsagari Street, was built in 1933 to designs by the architect Konstantinos Kyriakidis. Kyriakidis’s five-storey apartment building is an important example of eclecticism which, at the same time, follows the modernist ideas of its era, making room for a number of Art Deco elements. The construction of the building, which was “towering” for its time, provoked many reactions. The reason was the very short distance between such a massive structure and both the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch, as well as the obstruction of the view towards the eastern side of the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis. Today it is a characteristic example of the interwar architecture that flourished in an economically rising Athens.
