Ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος γεννήθηκε το 1846 στην Σηλυβρία της Θράκης και το λαϊκό του όνομα ήταν Αναστάσιος Κεφαλάς. Υιός πολυμελούς και φτωχιάς οικογένειας, αναγκάστηκε από πολύ νωρίς να δουλέψει για να βγάλει τα προς το ζην, γνωρίζοντας παράλληλα ως παιδί τη σκληρότητα της ζωής. Λέγεται ότι επτά ετών αγόρασε χαρτί και έραβε τα φύλλα μεταξύ τους.
