Maison Vouros – Eftaxia

This twin-building complex located on Paparigopoulou Street, in Klafthmonos Square, comprises of the Dekozi-Vouros Residence and the Eftaxias Residence. It now houses the Museum of the City of Athens, which showcases the history of the city from its declaration as the capital of the country until today. Built-in 1834 by German architects Lunder and Hoffer, the construction of the building had been commissioned by Dekozi-Vouros, a banker from Chios. It was one of the first new buildings in the city and remains a superb example of 'early classicism'. From its completion, the building overlooked the still-unrepaired square where remnants of the heavily damaged Haseki Wall were visible. King Otto and Queen Amalia resided in this building from 1837 until 1843 when they moved to their newly built palace. Following World War II, the structure underwent restoration, along with the connecting Eftaxias Residence. All reconstruction was based on a study by a distinguished architect named Ioannis Travlos.
