The building of the Municipal Art Gallery of Athens is located in the Municipality of Athens, in the district of Metaxourgeio, and is one of the oldest neoclassical buildings in Athens. The building operated as a silk factory until 1875 and its presence in the area gave the district of Metaxourgeio its name, as metaxi is Greek for ‘silk’. In 2007, the Athens City Council began restoration work so that the old factory could host important cultural events. Since 2010 it has been used as an art gallery. Today, the Municipal Art Gallery has a collection of more than 3,000 paintings, engravings and sculptures.
