The Katrakeio Theatre is the largest modern theatre in the country, with a capacity of 5,356 seats. It is located in the old quarry site on Selepitsari hill on an area of 500 acres. Shortly before 1982, on the initiative of Minos Volanakis, the old quarries were brought back to life and became a place of cultural creation. The theatre began to host major musical and theatrical performances. On 18 July 1983, the theatre opened its doors with concerts in memory of Manos Loizos, in which Mikis Theodorakis, Christos Leontis, Haroula Alexiou and Giorgos Dalaras performed. The Katrakeio Theatre began to host famous names of the world music scene such as Nina Simone, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Neville Brothers, Public Enemy, as well as dance and jazz. From 1983 until today, there is no great Greek artist, musician, composer, singer or actor who has not performed at the Katrakeio Theatre.
