The Grove of Nea Smyrni

The Grove of Nea Smyrni, a "verdant haven" in the heart of the city, was established in the 1920s. It is one of the largest parks in the municipalities of Attica, spanning an area of 50,000 square meters. Today, it consists of approximately 20% of forest trees (Halepian pine, pine, Thassos type pine, cypress, etc.), and almost 20% of ornamental trees, while 60% of its plant potential consists of conifers. The vegetation of the Grove is characterized by near monoculture and xerophytic greenery planted at a very high density. However, in recent years, the xerophytic character has been altered due to irrigation with ditches. The architecture of the Grove is complemented by two fountains, while its entire area is covered by fence with iron railings. While there are no sports facilities within the grove, a playground is open on a daily basis. The perimeter paths are used for training, exercise and jogging by individuals and by athletes from the city's clubs, while its entire perimeter is covered by a bicycle paths. Inside the Grove, there is a canteen and an open-air theater with a stage that can accommodate approximately 2,500 people, backstage areas, changing rooms, outdoor chess, and an environmental information center facility, which is under development. From time to time, book fairs have been held in the grove, and a summer cinema operated for many years. Following the redevelopment in 2007, the grove was transformed into a new urban green space for walking, recreation, and culture, environmentally friendly, as the redevelopment materials were stone, soil and wood.
