Mansion of Sotirios Arangyros (Dapia of Spetses)

The Anargyros Mansion is located on the square with pine trees, right behind the Dapia. Sotirios Anargyros, a man from Spetses who lived and worked in the USA during the 19th century, was a personal friend of Eleftherios Venizelos (Greek Prime Minister from 1915 to 1933) and a great benefactor of the island. He was responsible for financing projects in Spetses, including the water supply system, regional roads, the Poseidonio Hotel, and the Anargyrion and Korgialenion School. His residence was built in 1904 and designed by the architect P. Zizelas. It is a two-storey neoclassical, stone-built building with a garden and cobblestone walkways. Its main architectural feature is the peristyle stoa on the ground floor, which is artfully transformed into a balcony on the first floor. Influenced by the "fashion" of the time for ancient Egypt and the East, Anargyros named his residence "Neith", from the name of the ancient Egyptian goddess, and decorated it with sphinxes and other characteristic interior motifs. During the German Occupation, the building functioned as a Town Hall. Since 1929, it has been the property of the "Anargyrion and Korgialenion School".
