Ancient Iera Odos
In the Estavromenou Square in Aegaleo, next to the modern street of the same name, a part of the ancient Sacred Way (ancient Iera Odos) has been uncovered and is visible. Its construction was elaborate and its width was 5.50 metres. The road surface consisted of rammed earth, gravel and small stones. Two retaining walls defined the sides of the road. In several parts of the ancient road can be seen traces of carriage wheels. The pavements and ramps have been repaired several times, which shows that the road has been in use for a long time.
