Agia Moni

The monastery of Agia Moni (Holy Monastery) is built on one of the highest mountains of the island of Kythera and has a view not only of the coast of the Peloponnese but also of the entire island. The monastery offers its cells during the period of Decapentism, which is why so many visitors come to Kythera at that time. The church celebrates the feast of the Savior on August 6. The current church was built in 1840, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Locals say that Kolokotronis had vowed to the Virgin Mary that if the Greek Revolution was defeated, she would return and help rebuild it. The icon of the Virgin Mary was found by a shepherd in 1766 and has the figure of the Virgin Mary on one side and the figure of St. George on the other.
