Athens Celebrates its Freedom, 1974 & 1944

As 2024 marks a double anniversary for Greece – 80 years since the end of WWII and 50 years since the restoration of Democracy after the fall of the junta regime – Athens celebrates its freedom with a meticulously curated programme that lasts until November 2024.

The programme features a variety of artistic performances ranging from the classical repertoire to tribute concerts with songs that have played a special part in the history of Greek music and resistance, and of course, exhibitions documenting the celebration of freedom, democracy and hope.

  • 1974 & 1944: Athens Celebrates Its Freedom: An exhibition highlighting the joy and hope associated with democracy and freedom, which were overshadowed by Greece’s civil war in the autumn of 1944 and the Cyprus occupation in the summer of 1974.
Until 28/10, Arts Centre at Eleftherias Park
  • Restoration of Optimism: A selection of artworks with themes such as freedom, violence, resistance and hope from the collection of the Municipal Gallery of Athens.
    26/09-03/11, Thursday – Saturday & Monday – Tuesday 11 am – 7 pm, Sunday 10 am – 4 pm, Athens Municipal Art Gallery
  • Democracy and Conflicts: A group exhibition of invited artists, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy and reflecting on democracy, conflict, violence and how art encourages cultural exploration.
    03/10-17/11, Tuesday – Saturday 11 am – 7 pm, Sunday 10 am – 4 pm, Athens Municipal Art Gallery
