Carnival for children in Athens

Carnival is the celebration of children and the Municipality of Athens is trying to make children from 4 years old and their families live for 15 days their own Halloween story, create, play and have fun, in all the political spaces of OPANDA.

The Culture, Sports and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA), which oversees the program, opens from February 16 to March 5, all its cultural spaces, the Museums, the Art Gallery, the Creative Learning Centers, the Libraries, the Arts Center and the “Melina” Cultural Center and offers a multitude of creative Halloween programs and activities for our little friends and the whole family. Workshops in visual arts, musical movement, storytelling, theatrical play, guided tours, museum-pedagogical programs, children’s theater performances and caroling, promise to spread countless children’s smiles!

Exhibition: Carnival images of Old Athens
Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Hatzimihalis”

The old Athens, that of the belle époque with secular events and carnival dances in its stately homes, but also the Athens of tradition with its own feasts are revived through two different visual images at the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Hatzimihalis”, leaving the scent of a beautiful capital.

The first image shows a lady invited to a carnival dance preparing herself, trying on dresses-toilets, furs, hats, feathers and of course masks, in order for her appearance to match the luxury of the Athenian carnival “evening” of the time…

The second representational approach is inspired by the work of Nikolaos Gyzis “Carnival in Athens”. Somewhere, in an everyday house, a group celebrates Halloween with music and a happy mood. A family shot with a warm atmosphere, around a table and the place disturbed by the feast, men, women and children are having fun with the customs of Halloween, while the masquerades invade and scare the little ones.

Curator of the exhibition: Stavroula Pisimisi, folklorist of the Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Agg. Hatzimichalis”

Entry for the public is free.

Opening hours: Tuesday-Friday: 11:00-19:00, Saturday-Sunday 10:00-15:00, Monday closed
