Miaoulia is the big festival of the island that takes place every year on the Saturday closest to June 21st. They are three-day events in honor of the great Hydra admiral Andreas Miaoulis who offered a lot to the Struggle for the Liberation of the Nation. They are a wonderful opportunity to enjoy traditional dances during the day and fireworks at night.

The ceremonial part includes on the Second day of the celebrations the reception of the representative of the Navy and the officials at the Town Hall by the Mayor and the Municipal Council.

On the third day, Divine Liturgy in the Holy Cathedral, transfer from the Historical Archives – Museum of Likythos with the heart of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis and doxology in the Holy Cathedral.

Afterwards, a memorial service and laying of wreaths on the statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis at the Castle and the return of Likythos with the heart of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis to the Historical Archives – Museum.

Finally, the transition of the Officials to the Pier of the Hydra Merchant Marine Academy, throwing a wreath into the sea in honour of the Sailors of 1821, saluting cannon shots and playing the National Anthem.

In “Miauleia”, in addition to the ceremonial part, exhibitions, speeches, musical events, theatrical performances, games, municipal dances, torch relays, raft races and sports competitions are included.

They are watched by a large number of people, honouring in this way this holiday of historical memory of events and persons, who played a primary role in the outcome of the revolution of 1821.

The festivities culminate and solemnly close with the burning of fireworks, and the re-enactment of the Old Man’s Naval Battle and the burning of the Turkish flagship, on the third and last day of the events.
