Indicator system

Within the framework of the operation of the Sustainable Tourism Development Observatory of the Region of Attica, a large amount of data is collected and processed that not only reflect the current state of tourism in the area under consideration but also define indicators related to the tourism sector and its sustainability. These indicators concern the three main pillars that determine the viability and sustainability of the sector, and are a. Economic indicators, b. Social indicators and c. Environmental indicators.

  • The Economic Indicators that are investigated and presented concern the percentage of tourism’s contribution to the country’s total GDP, the percentage of jobs provided in the tourism sector of the Region of Attica to the total number of jobs in the country, the percentage of businesses in the tourism sector to the total number of businesses in the tertiary sector, Tourism Expenditure, the Intensity of the number of overnight stays per tourist bed (monthly and annually), the Seasonality of the percentage of overnight stays in the Region of Attica June-September to the total number of overnight stays.
  • The Social Indicators that are investigated and presented concern the Density of the number of visitors per one hundred Attica residents and the percentage of workers in the tourism sector by gender.
  • The Environmental Indicators that are investigated and presented concern the Energy Consumption per overnight stay, the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere and due to tourism activities, the water consumption per overnight stay, the percentage of Water Consumption per overnight stay (MSW Management), the percentage of Businesses that implement environmental actions to the total number of Businesses, the Built-up area covered by tourist Businesses to the total number of Businesses, the Tourist Flows (Average number of tourists (peak season)/area covered by tourist businesses), Water Quality recording the percentage of beaches awarded the Blue Flag, Actions recording the number of sustainable tourism strategies or policies and the Implemented Action Plans with agreed monitoring and evaluation tools and finally as regards Culture by the total number of tickets to cultural interest points in the peak season to the total number of the year.
