The National Library is open to everyone in SNFCC and Vallianio
Treasures of knowledge and exemplary service await you to discover
The National Library of Greece opens both in its new headquarters, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), and in the historic Vallianio Mansion in the city centre and offers researchers and the general public expanded collections, modern services, and a Lending Department. Specifically, on Monday, December 17, 2018, in the new building, readers can access the periodical manuscript collections and the Lending Department. From Monday, January 14, 2019, they will also have access to all the collections of the research library. Also, on the same day, Vallianio reopens as a newspaper reading room and as an information portal with services of the National Library.
The new digital services of the National Library of Greece (NBH) were created in the context of the relocation project to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, implemented with an exclusive donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), and respond to the vision of its renewal and modernization. The SNF created the SNFCC, which includes the new facilities of the National Library and the National Opera, as well as Stavros Niarchos Park. The SNF supported EBE in its transition to the SNFCC with a donation of €5 million, within the framework of which its digital services were also created.
So far, EBE’s digital services include the Unified Readers’ Certification System, the Digital Collections Platform, the new website, the new electronic catalogue, the Unified Source Search Service, and the Electronic Reading Room.
To take full advantage of all the services and documents, everyone must be certified as a registered reader in the Unified Reader Certification System of EBE. All visitors will have access to dozens of EBE electronic resources, whether of scientific content or general interest and will be able to read the full text of millions of articles and books. For the majority of these sources, the reader is not required to be certified, as long as they are used through the EBE network within its buildings. However, authenticated readers will be able to remotely access any of the permitted sources.
The opening hours of the National Library of Greece at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and Vallianio Megaro are, for now, as follows: Monday to Friday: 09:00 to 14:00. Public holidays: closed. Access to the Lending Department reading rooms is free to the public every day and on public holidays from 06:00 to 24:00 for computer use and reading. For the study of the manuscripts, it is necessary to have previously contacted the staff of the Manuscripts Department, via e-mail at or by telephone at the numbers 213-0999920 / 213-0999921. The public information office, located on the ground floor of the National Library, provides information on the operation and services of the EBE.
More information about the services of the National Library and the subscription to them can be found on the new website
