There are the ruins of the famous and unique Sanctuary of Nemesis, built in the 6th century BC and flourished in the centuries that followed. The area has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic period and is in a very important position for the defense of Attica. For this reason, during the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians built a strong fortress in the area of Rhamnous. They wanted to control the course of the ships that supplied the city with grain and other goods. Excavations in the area began in the 19th century and are still continuing. So far, they have discovered part of the ancient wall, a small theater, findings from all phases of the life of the sanctuary’s life and a section of the road that led from the ancient municipality of Rhamnous to the sanctuary and the fortress.
