Brexiza Beach, a beautiful beach with light colored fine sand and turquoise waters, surrounded by lush vegetation and palm trees, located in Nea Makri, in the Municipality of Marathon. In 2023 it was awarded with the Blue Flag. It is very close to Athens, less than 50 kilometers from the center of the city. It is a long sandy beach, with a nice coastal promenade, on which there are cafes, which have even set up umbrellas and sunbeds for a more comfortable and relaxing bath. Of course, there are also unorganized sections.
This particular beach takes its name from the archaeological site of the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods which is located nearby and is a site of significant archaeological interest. Excavations revealed an extensive sanctuary complex dedicated to Egyptian gods and a luxurious bathhouse, as well as the large elliptical cistern further south. The complex was founded by Herodes Atticus around 160 A.D. The great orator and sophist chose Marathon for the establishment of the sanctuary because it was his place of origin and residence. The complex was probably located within the boundaries of the estate he owned in the area. Apparently, it is the “sanctuary of Canopus”, as mentioned by Philostratos (2nd – 3rd century A.D.), author of Herod’s biography.
