Chaidari Park of Historical Memory and Environmental Awareness

Most of the park was part of the Chaidari military camp. It covers an area of 65 acres and has been acquired by the municipality in recent decades. In these acres many low, medium and high green areas have been created. Pines, eucalyptus, palm trees, willows, plane trees, carob trees, pseudocacias, apple trees, cypresses, poplars, phoenix trees, ornamental plums, callistemon, make up the flora of the park. It serves as a recreational area. Some of the spaces included in the park are: the open theatre, sports facilities, walking paths, wooden tables with wooden seats, etc. A part of the park, about 40 square metres, was built in cooperation between the Regional Unit of Athens and the Municipality of Chaidari and was completed in 2009. This area is not only a recreational area, but also a tribute to those who were tortured in the terrible Block 15 and executed in Chaidari during the German occupation, in the Chaidari concentration camp. The Municipality of Athens plans to extend the Historical Memory Park by approximately 25 acres towards the Attica Hospital and the Chaidari Youth Park, in order to create an integrated green area and enrich it with other activities, making it the largest green area within the urban network of the western side. The green area within the park was named the Villeneuve D'Ascq square in 2010, in honour of the twinning of the two towns.
