Lavreotiki Geopark

The Lavreotiki Geopark coincides with the borders of the Municipality of Lavreotiki. It has an area of 176.87 km2 and includes 65 settlements with a total population of 25,102 inhabitants. The population community is 299 inhabitants/km2. The largest city is Lavrio with 7,078 inhabitants. The Lavreotiki Geopark is an area of 176 square kilometers, where mining activities were carried out on an area of 40,000 acres in the Kamariza-Souriza-Plaka triangle, and in order to research the entire area, someone must record for months or even years what it has been carried out there. Ιt is enough for someone to consider that there are 1000 mining galleries and the same number of shafts. The ancient Greeks intensively exploited the silver-lead ores of Lavreotika for the production of metallic silver. The ancient Athenians developed admirable mining and metallurgical technique for the production of silver centuries B.C. The inclusion of the Lavreotiki Geopark in the UNESCO Global Network was just recently announced. It is an important development for the region as it marks the emergence of the region at a global level and the protection of its great geological, mining-metallurgical, cultural and ecological value. In the Lavreotiki Geopark there have been drawn 7 geo-paths, where the visitor has the opportunity to wander through characteristic geological formations, geological lines and geotopes. Its operation serves the geological, mineralogical, mining and ultimately environmental value of the area, combining this dimension with its cultural, aesthetic and touristic value.
