Marathon Run Museum

The Marathon Museum houses the permanent exhibition of the Olympic Marathons and presents to the Greek public for the first time the history of the Olympic Marathons from 1896 to 2000. More than 3,100 exhibits document the history of the Marathon from 1896 to the present day. It is a unique sports collection that could not be found anywhere else other than in the birthplace of the Marathon. The exhibition is divided into two main sections. The first building hosts a journey through the history of the Olympic Marathons, through the collection of rare objects, while the second building documents the global movement of the Marathon, through thematic sections dedicated to the Marathons held in every corner of the planet, to the Olympic champions, to the appearance of women in the Marathon and even to the equipment of the Marathon runners. The medal of the first winner of the Olympic Marathon of Athens in 1896, Spyros Louis, a copy of the cup awarded to him and his personal belongings. The medals, cups, decorations and numerous relics of Stelios Kyriakides, winner of the Boston International Marathon in 1946. The museum also exhibits relics from the life and activity of the deputy, Balkan champion and pacifist Grigoris Lambrakis, with the most important flag with the emblem of peace from the March of 1963. It also houses collections of the great Greek marathon runners Christos Vartzakis, Thanassis Ragazos, Michalis Koussis, Christos Papachristou, Kyriakos Lazaridis, Takis Skoulis, Maria Polyzou, Spyros Andriopoulos, Nikos Polias, Christos Sotiropoulos, Panagiota Nikolakopoulou-Louvi and many other Greek and foreign champions.
