The Maria Callas Park, established on the site of the Vrilissia Naval Base and spanning 52 acres, lies at the foothills of Mount Pentelikon. In 1958, this land was expropriated by royal decree for use as the “Repository of National Relics” of the Hellenic Navy. This area was used to install a communications base that linked to a nearby American base of Nea Makri.
In 1987, the area’s urban plan was approved, designating the specific block as a “green space and gentle sports area”. The Municipality claimed the land and eventually transformed it into Maria Callas Park. It is now the largest urban green space for recreation, sports and social interaction for residents and visitors of the area. In the area of the park there is a small artificial lake, a skatepark for young people and walking routes, while parking spaces and side streets around the closed area have been planned. In areas of the park, a summer cinema with free entrance operates periodically and under the responsibility of the Municipality of Vrilissia.
