Markellos Tower

The impressive tower in the town of Aegina is named after Spyridon Markellos, a local dignitary, member of the Society of Friends, and fighter in the Greek War of Independence of 1821. Local tradition states that he built it himself in 1802. However, its architecture suggests a Venetian watchtower built in the 17th century, as part of the port's fortifications. During the revolution, the building housed fighters and politicians, both Greek and foreign. From 1826 to 1828, it served as the seat of the then government and, during Kapodistrian era, it housed some ministers and the State Treasury. Today, it belongs to the Municipality of Aegina and is home to the island’s Kapodistrian Cultural Center. Throughout the year, it hosts art exhibitions, lectures and interesting cultural activities. In addition to all this, the Tower also houses the "Spyros Alexiou" Center for Social Issues.
