National Museum of Contemporary Art

The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) has begun its operation in 2000. Its permanent home is the former Fix factory. It collects, preserves, documents, researches and exhibits works of contemporary Greek and international artistic production. Its continuous pursuit is the promotion of artistic literacy and public awareness of contemporary culture, combined with the development of scientific research and specialization in museology, history and theory of contemporary art. An integral part of its founding purposes is the highlighting of pioneering and experimental artistic trends and the production of audiovisual works with new media. It is a complete proposal-experience for visitors. In the context of its social and educational role, EMST offers the public opportunities to interact with contemporary art through its exhibition activity, actions, programs and publications. The Museum's collection consists of arts by Greek and foreign artists, in different media - painting, sculpture, video, installations, photography, engravings, industrial design, etc. - that deal with current and timeless issues. His collection includes Greek and international contemporary art. The Museum was founded in 2000 and until now has focused on 21st century art. However, it also collects Greek art from the wider post-war period, through which the main stages of development of the modern tradition are illuminated inside and outside the country. The core of the collection consists mainly of works of conceptual art as well as works of socio-political orientation. To date, the collection has 1.400 works.
