The construction of the building complex of the Central Municipal Market began slowly in 1878 by the Municipality of Athens, in the area east of Varvakeios. However, the fire of August 8-9, 1884, which burnt down the huts of the older Agora (of the Turkish occupation) that was still in operation east of Hadrian’s Library, accelerated the works on Athinas Street and the New Market was completed in 1886. Since then it has been in continuous operation, housing a large number of food shops. It was gradually renovated between 1979 and 1996 by the Municipality in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture. The market sells meat, fish, vegetables, sausages, herbs and spices and is now a place of meeting, entertainment and celebration.
