Carnival

The traditional Greek Carnival, or “Apokries”, is one of the most eagerly anticipated celebrations of the year, and Attica, the Greater Athens Region, comes alive with vibrant energy during this time. Held in the weeks leading up to Lent, the Carnival is a joyful and colorful feast of music, dance, and merrymaking. Streets are filled with revelers in costumes, while parades, live performances, and local festivals bring an atmosphere of pure delight!

In Attica, local traditions like masquerades and street parties add to the fun, with many lively events hosted in various municipalities and neighborhoods every Sunday from the 8th of February till the 2nd of March. In Kythera and the Saronic Islands, Carnival customs also hold strong, with traditional processions, local dances, and a blend of island-specific flavors that make each region’s celebration unique.
