Lighthouse of Spetses

In Spetses there is one of the two oldest lighthouses that operated in Greece in 1837 in the Greek lighthouse network. The Lighthouse is located on the far right in the Old Port of Spetses. Its construction began in 1831 and its operation in 1837, and the buildings that the visitor sees today were built in 1885. As early as 1827, torches were installed to serve the same purpose in the respective ports. Initially it operated with oil while it had up to six lighthouse keepers who took care of the power supply and winding of the mechanism. The Spetses Lighthouse has been automatic since 1986 and operates with electricity. The height of the Lighthouse is over 11 meters while it is located on a small hill, which makes its total height above sea level 27 meters. The Spetses Lighthouse gives a flash every 5 seconds and a beam of 18 nautical miles. The lighthouse of Spetses, in addition to being a useful navigational tool, is also a beautiful reason for a walk on the pine-covered hill where it is located.
