Starting from the Church of the Patron Saint of the island, Agios Konstantinos of Hydra, you can follow the uphill path that leads to the Monastery of Prophet Ilias. It is a 60 minutes’ walk. The current monastery was built in 1813 by the “Kollyvades” holy fathers, on the former site of the dependency of the Holy Monastery of Panagia of Faneromeni in Hydra. The monastery’s catholicon is in the architectural style of a simple basilica with a dome, according to the saintly pattern, surrounded by cells or auxiliary buildings and was inaugurated in 1815, on the day of the Feast of the Entry of the Virgin.
Today, several old portable icons are preserved, Pantokrator on the dome, Platytera and a wonderful wood-carved iconostasis. The Monastery has a rich library, which was organized in 1870 by the then abbot Ierotheos Kostopoulos. In the Monastery of Prophet Ilias’s courtyard, you will find a cistern with drinking water, a threshing floor and stables. During the Greek revolution of 1821, the Monastery functioned as a prison in which Kolokotronis and other chieftains were imprisoned.
Day of celebration: July 20th, the day of the celebration of the prophet Ilias.
