Holy Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Aegina Cathedral)

Also known as the "Great Church", the historic metropolitan church of Aegina is an impressive three-aisled basilica with three domes. It is a three-story church, as the middle aisle is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, the right aisle to Saint Dionysios, patron saint of Aegina, and the left aisle to Saint John Theologos. The Metropolis was built in1806 and its history is connected with the modern Greek state. The Metropolis was used as a parliament building in 1827 and 1828, for the oath taking of the first Government of Greece. This is also where Ioannis Kapodistrias was sworn in as the First Governor of the Greek state, in January 1828. In the Metropolis there are many historical relics of inestimable value, an impressive marble iconostasis, remarkable hagiographic frescoes and inlaid icons. Opposite the Despotic Throne, the wooden pew of Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias is still preserved
