Herakleidon Pedestrian Street

Herakleidon Street is the beating heart of Thiseio. Extending from Apostolou Pavlou Street to Thessalonikis Street, it crosses a sizeable part of this large neighbourhood. Dating back to the late 18th century, the road was constructed in conjunction with a new city wall that was built over the remnants of the old Themistoclean wall. During the 1850s, horse-drawn coaches transported the public through the area. Within a few short years steam engines, and later trolleys, replaced horsepower. Today small sections of the old tracks are still visible on the pedestrian street. Surrounded by elegant 19th and early-20th-century buildings, as well as a wide variety of cafés, restaurants, bars, shops, and speciality boutiques, it is also home to the Herakleidon Museum of Visual Arts.
