Attica and Greece are in their prime as top international destinations, something reflected on the big screen as well. More and more prominent productions choose the cities and sceneries of Attica as their filming locations. The most recent typical examples: “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and the “Lost Daughter”, both of them shot on the island of Spetses. Let’s go back and take a look at the most important movies for which Attica has been the ideal “studio”.
Boy on a Dolphin (1957)
The first american film ever shot in Greece. Ever since, Hydra became the first greek destination cherished by the international jet set. No surprise there, since the movie pays tribute to the beauty of the argosaronic island.
La Casse (1970)
One of the most iconic chase scenes in the history of cinema has been shot in Attica. “This 1970 – movie tells the story of an adventurous jewelry heist. A Fiat 124 and an Opel Record perform an impressive car chase scene, on the streets of Piraeus, Mikrolimano and Kastella.
The Greek Tycoon (1976)
The turbulent love story of Aristotelis Onassis and Jackie Kennedy, although their true names are not used in the movie. Some scenes were filmed in Athens.
Two Faces of January (2014)
A film adaptation of the legendary book of Patricia Highsmith, mostly set in Athens and Crete. No other choice but to actually film the movie in these places.
Rise (2022)
Produced by Disney+, the movie sheds light on the unmatched story of Giannis, Thanasis and the other Antetokounmpo family members. Filmed in the neighborhoods of Sepolia, Zografou and other city spots of Athens, where the family started and continued their “journey” in Greece. The story of a greek boy who actually lived the american dream, first aired in Disney+ in June 2022.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
A millionaire invites his friends to spend a weekend on his private island in Greece. Not just to hang around but to play a mystery game, with him being the victim of murder. Detective Benoit Blanc is the star in this funny, mysterious and adventurous movie, filmed, among other locations, in Spetses.
The Lost Daughter (2022)
A woman enjoys her solitary vacations on the island of Spetses, when a young mother and her daughter spending their holidays by the beach, caught her attention. The movie was entirely filmed in Spetses during the pandemic.
This was just the cream of the crop of the Hollywood moments in Attica, chosen by the colossal studios as their filming location. The above list does not include well-known international movies featuring the greek ambience, such as the classic Never on Sunday with Melina Merkouri.
