The Acropolis Museum in Attica, the Greater Athens Region, invites you to explore the fascinating exhibition “The Ancient Civilizations of Basilicata: Treasures Emerging to Light,” currently on display at its Temporary Exhibition Gallery.
Organized by Italy’s Ministry of Culture and realized in collaboration with the Acropolis Museum, this remarkable exhibition showcases over 300 objects from the region of Basilicata in southern Italy, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the ancient culture of this area, historically known as Oenotria. These artifacts – many of which have been previously held in the storerooms of various Italian museums and never been on public display until now – reveal the rich interactions between Greek settlers from the Peloponnese and the local populations of Basilicata, particularly in the context of trade, cultural exchange, and settlement during the period from the end of the Bronze Age through the 6th century BC. Visitors will be transported to the ancient coastal areas of Magna Graecia, where the Greeks engaged with the vibrant civilizations they encountered.
In addition to the Acropolis Museum’s exhibition, the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens will also showcase 20 select items from Basilicata, offering a deeper insight into this ancient cultural crossroads. Don’t miss the chance to experience this rare exhibition and discover the treasures of Basilicata at the Acropolis Museum!
