On June 22, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra joins forces with the leading violinist and principal musician Leonidas Kavakos, in one of the most important musical events of the summer. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading orchestras in the world. It was founded in 1900 and has collaborated with legendary names in music, such as Wilhelm Furtwengler, Herbert von Karajan, Georges Pretre, Vladimir Fedosehev, etc. Its last appearance at the Athens Festival was in 1967, under the direction of Wolfgang Sawallisch.

Leonidas Kavakos appeared for the first time in a concert at the Herodeion stage in 1984, with the ERT Symphony Orchestra. Then, within a few years, he won the Sibelius Competition in 1985, and the Paganini and Naumburg Competitions in 1988, prizes that catapulted him among the world’s leading soloists, and a host of other awards followed. As a soloist, but also as a conductor, he has collaborated with all the leading orchestras in the world.

The concert program will include Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor, Op. 64, Symphony no. 31 in D major KV 297 (of Paris) by Mozart, and Symphony no. 7, in A major, Beethoven’s opus 92.
