On the pedestrian walkway of Aiolou Street, many important findings from antiquity have been discovered. This proved the important fact that Aiolou Street continues the strong ancient fortification that was uncovered in the 1970s and whose elements are still preserved in the building of the National Bank of Greece.
A closer look at the details reveals a strong wall of boulders resting directly on the shale of the ground. There is also the inner defensive wall, known as the “proteichisma” (the outer wall). The moat, with its retaining wall, has been preserved. And finally, the outer perimeter road. The configuration of the space and its projection through 3 glass pyramids allow passers-by to observe all the details.
This construction was carried out at the time of the 2004 Olympic Games, as part of the programme to unify the archaeological sites of Athens.
