One of the most important events of the modern Olympic Games is the Marathon race (42,195 m.) which was introduced to the Olympic program in 1896 in memory of the heroic feat of the angel-messenger who brought the message of victory in the battle of Marathon (490 B.C.) to the Athenians. In memory of this event, every year at the beginning of November, on the exact same route, Athens becomes the center of world attention, as runners of all ages from every corner of the planet come to participate in the annual Authentic Marathon, starting from the Tomb of Marathon and finishing at the Panathenaic Stadium. In addition to the classic marathons, many athletes participate in the 2 races of 5 & 10 km in the center of Athens, as well as the 1.2 km kids race. This is the largest mass sports event with cultural and historical references on the tracks of a global route.
