Chaos (Kitsou)

Chaos is located in the heart of the Municipality of Lavreotiki. A few kilometers outside the Lavrion Town, there is a large heart-shaped crater. It is a relatively unexplored corner of Attica, but it is known as the Sounio National Park, which presents a special historical, geological-mining and paleontological interest. Four kilometers from Lavrion is Saint Constantine (Kamariza). Following the direction to the Sounio National Park there is the Holy Trinity recreation area. A few meters to the left of the pine tree, the asphalt road leads to ""Egoilo Chaos"" or ""Chaos of Kitsou"" as the locals call it. Kitsos was a famous bandit operating in the area during the 19th century. It is an impressive circular chasm 55 m deep and 120 m in diameter that was probably formed due to the collapse of the cave roof. More specifically, it is a sinkhole-shaped karst sinkhole (sinkhohe), i.e. this is the case of the karst, which are typical forms of cavities that are mainly observed in carbonate rocks (limestones, dolomites, marbles) and more rarely in gypsum and mineral salt. This is a result due to the corrosive and dissolving power of water. Limestone and schist formations can be seen on the walls of the cave, as well as the entrances of mining galleries at a fairly high height. In ancient times, the entire valley was a construction site with workshops, residences, shrines, laundries and water tanks. ""Chaos"" needs further study because it is very interesting.
