Interactive Agricultural Folklore Museum of Varnavas

The Varnavas Interactive Agricultural Folklore Museum of the Municipality of Marathon was founded in the summer of 2002. It is a multi-thematic and multifunctional space. Its collection consists of 5,000 exhibits, while visitors have the rare opportunity to explore and study a significant part of the exhibits. The Museum cooperates with institutions such as the Academy of Athens, the University of Athens, Prefectures, Local Governments, Associations, Schools of all levels of education, but also with Museums abroad through European programs, contributing to the cultural development of Attica and Greece generally. In the Museum, there are household utensils, local costumes, textiles, embroideries, lamps, weights and measures, scales, a loom room, a harvest room, a room of agricultural tools as well as books from the past. The guided tour of the museum gives the visitor a hands-on approach to all the thematic sections, while the children learn about the cultural heritage and gain respect for it and the surrounding area, thus becoming aware of its perpetuation. The Museum also includes the following Departments: -Historical Archive Department - Ethnological Collection Department -Art Collection Department -Library Department -Weaving-loom, Embroidery, Land Cultivation, Embroidered bread and Traditional food workshops. -Shop selling postcards, printed handkerchiefs, textiles and ceramic replicas -Traditional cafe with drinks and local sweets.
