The lighthouse was built in 1901. The height of its stone tower is 25 metres and its focal height is 110 metres. It was built by the English in order to facilitate navigation in the strait between Kythera and Elafonisos. The lighthouse is built on Cape Spathi, the northernmost point of Kythera, near the Karava area and next to the beach of Agios Nikolaos.
