Nea Philadelphia Grove

It covers an area of about 420 hectares and has a great biodiversity of trees, shrubs and other types of vegetation. The grove was created in 1914, when part of the previously bare hill was planted with trees. Planting continued before the war and the grove gradually grew to its present size. Many trees were felled during the German occupation, but the losses were replaced by new planting in 1948. Major tree planting was completed in the 1990s and continues to this day, albeit on a smaller scale. An artificial lake was created in the decade between 1956 and 1966, while the summer cinema was fenced in and opened in 1959. Later, a tourist pavilion was built and operated next to the lake. Between 1955 and 1995, a small zoo was built in the area of the grove.
