Comicdom Con Athens

Comicdom CON Athens, the first, largest and longest-running Greek festival exclusively dedicated to comics, opens its gates on September 10, 11 & 12, 2021, for its 15th anniversary event. The Festival, which takes place this year at the premises of the Hellenic American Union and Klathmonos Square, presents a multitude of events, with the center of Athens hosting a unique three-day event!
Entry to Comicdom Con Athens is - as always - free, this year with the fullness and health rules set by the current guidelines.
★ The Hellenic American Union hosts the exhibitions of Comicdom CON Athens, while at the same time, during the festival, panels, workshops, screenings and events are held, such as the Greek Comic Awards and the Comicdom Cosplay Competition.
- In the central international exhibition THINK BLUE, THINK STROOF, the well-known little blue creatures that grew up and were loved by generations through cartoons, comics and movies, leaving an indelible mark on pop culture, are introduced again, through a series of panels that narrate the amazing their journey through time, comic pages and fascinating memorabilia. The exhibition is presented at the Hatzikyriakos-Gikas Gallery of the Hellenic American Union and is held in collaboration with IMPS, the Smurfs' rights management company, and with the support of the Embassy of Belgium in Athens.
At the same time, two of the best-loved episodes of the classic Smurf period are shown and our little friends can participate in a special children's program starring the favorite blue heroes, while in collaboration with the new illustration festival, Illustradays, comic creators and illustrators give their own versions of the Smurfs in a live sketch event.
- With the Czech Republic being this year's Honored Country of the Festival, two important exhibitions are presented: The exhibition 100 YEARS OF CZECH COMICS unfolds the rich history and variety of Czech comics and their evolution over time, while the children's exhibition 12 WORLDS introduces visitors of the same number of illustrators of children's books. As part of the Czech tribute, the Festival welcomes the award-winning comics creator and illustrator Lucie Lomová, and also screens the most successful and award-winning Czech animated film of recent years, THE MONO-FOG. The tribute is held in collaboration with the Czech Center of Athens.
In order for more people to be able to safely enjoy the exhibitions "THINK BLUE, THINK STROOF", "100 YEARS OF CZECH COMICS" and "12 WORLDS" at the Hellenic American Union, in addition to the three days of Comicdom CON Athens, the galleries are also open 6 – September 9, 12:00-20:00.
- Honored Greek artist of this year's festival is Vassilis Lolos. The Eisner and Harvey Award-winning comics creator is the first of a new generation to cross borders and build an enviable international career. Since 2004, he has been working with foreign companies, such as Marvel, DC, Vertigo, Image, Dark Horse, Fox, Oni Press, IDW, Heavy Metal, Vice US, Warner Bros, Universal Pictures, etc. Through his individual exhibition in which selected works are presented, the public has the opportunity to get to know his multidimensional talent better.
★ In Klathmonos Square, comics shops, publishers, and more than 100 comics creators, almost the whole of the Greek scene, are all together again in the safety of the outdoor space, with merchandise and, of course, long-awaited new (but also older) creations and publications .
★ Finally, in collaboration with the Digital Comics Museum (comicsmuseum.gr), the new online multi-site for comics, three online exhibitions are being hosted from September 1st:
- In the anniversary exhibition entitled 15 YEARS OF COMICDOM CON ATHENS, international stars of the 9th Art such as Milo Manara, David Lloyd and John Romita Jr., "meet" renowned Greek artists, such as Ilias Kyriazis, Michalis Dialynas and DaNi , in a unique visual experience, with works created exclusively for the Festival, during the 15 years of its influential presence.
- In the retrospective exhibition of Vassilis Lolos, a more extensive version of the physical exhibition of the internationally recognized artist is presented.
- In the exhibition COMICS VS. CORONA, the acclaimed Czech artist and illustration professor, Václav Šlajch, created 6 pages of comics on the subject of the coronavirus, and three artists, the Belgian Steven Dhondt, the Japanese Miki Yamamoto and the Greek Apostolis Ioannou, continued the story, each with their own his, unique way.
Comicdom CON Athens 2021 is organized by Comicdom Press and the Hellenic American Union. The Festival is held with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Municipality of Athens.
