Mikrolimano

It has an oval shape and many names: Mikrolimano, Fanari, Tourkolimano, Port of Koumoundourou. But in ancient times it had only one name: Port of Munychia. It belongs to the district of Kastella, with which it is connected by the uphill streets with the youth cafes and bars. During the Byzantine period it was called Fanari, probably because there was a lantern at its entrance (Greek word "fanos"). The port of Koumoundourou was named after the villa of the same name that existed at its southern end, where today the Yacht Club of Greece stands. At the time of the Greek Revolution of 1821 was named Tourkolimano. Mikrolimano is one of the most beautiful spots of Piraeus with many options in terms of food and entertainment. In ancient times, along with the other two ports of Piraeus, Zea and the central one, the port of Munychia, it was considered a naval port of Athens - they had even built a wall to protect the port facilities. It had piers with an opening of 37 meters and at their ends were built towers that were a continuation of the wall of Piraeus. It had 82 shipyards and docks.
