Celebrate International Museum Day 2025 in Attica, the Greater Athens Region!

Each year on May 18, museums around the world celebrate International Museum Day, an initiative of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) that highlights the vital role museums play in cultural exchange, education, and shaping more informed, inclusive societies. In 2025, the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities” invites us to reflect on how museums can adapt, connect, and inspire in an ever-evolving world.

To honor this year’s Museum Day, join the Acropolis Museum on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, for a weekend of discovery and reflection. Explore the power of water in ancient life during the Saturday gallery talk “Aquatic routes” at 11 a.m., and don’t miss the thought-provoking discussion at 6:30 p.m. between acclaimed artist Michael Rakowitz and curator Elina Kountouri, part of the new exhibition “Allspice | Michael Rakowitz & Ancient Cultures”.

On Sunday, enjoy free admission and guided presentations linking ancient artifacts with contemporary art, revealing stories of memory, displacement, and resilience.
