The statue of Asclepius of Mounychia was unearthed in 1888 during the excavation of a foundation trench in the south-eastern part of the port of Zea, on the site of the summer theater “Tsocha”. The excavation that followed brought a number of findings, which were presented by Iakovos Dragatsis in a short excavation report.
Votive inscriptions to Asclepius, which accompanied some of the offerings, confirmed from the beginning that the sanctuary of Asclepius of Mounychia was located in this area. According to the old excavation notes, the sanctuary included an enclosure and a temple. Today, the architectural remains are not visible because the site is completely built and no photograph of it has been published. Only the location of the sanctuary is known thanks to old drawings.
The movable finds discovered by Dragatsis are kept, some in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus and others in the National Archaeological Museum.
