Omonia Metro Station

The first railway station of "Omonia" was inaugurated on May 17, 1895 and was an open-air semi-underground station of the open trench type at the intersection of Lykourgou and Athinas Streets. It was built as a new terminal to the north of the then steam railway line Thission - Piraeus, which eventually became the first section of the later Line 1 of the metro network. Its first extension from Thission to Omonoia became a reality with the help of a tunnel that was started in 1889 with the cut and cover method and was completed in May 1895, together with the construction of the first open-air station of Omonia. The location of the first station was considered unsuitable for the extension of the railway network to the north, so in January 1928 the construction of a new, completely underground station began under Omonia Square, 100 meters north of the original. The Omonia station under the square of the same name was inaugurated in 1930, and until 1948, when the extension of the electric line to the north was inaugurated; Omonia was the terminal station in Athens. As needs have changed, the Station has also changed, without changing its architectural features, which were declared worthy of preserving when they were built. Its current form dates back to 2003, when it underwent major upgrades in preparation for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. At the same time, the Line 1 station was declared a National Monument in 2001, so the renovation was carried out without altering the original architecture. As part of the construction of the metro network, the first sections of two new metro lines, Line 2 and Line 3, were built between 1992 and 2000. The station has eight entrances and exits around Omonia Square. All of them have escalators, while there are also some elevators for people with disabilities. Omonia station is connected to the political and social life of modern Athens. Take some time to walk around and admire the works of famous Greek artists such as "Football Players" by artist Pavlos and the "Queue" by Nikos Kesanlis, which are part of an "underground art collection" that you will never see again in any transportation system in the world.
