As you enter the port of Hydra, your eyes fall upon the imposing bastions protecting its entrance. Built in the 18th century, the cannons on the bastion protected the island from assault by the Ottoman fleet and pirates during the War for Independence.
Positioned high atop the rock overlooking both ends of the port, these armed bastions successfully kept military and criminal intruders out of port.
Today, the bastions offer visitors an unobstructed view of the sea and the village below, especially beautiful by the light of a setting sun.
