Sixteen marble busts of heroes of the Revolution of 1821 line the Avenue of Heroes in this national memorial site.
Created between 1934 and 1937 in honour of the heroes of the national struggle for liberation, these 16 sculptures were crafted by some of Greece’s most renowned artists. At the park entrance facing Alexandras Avenue stands the mounted bronze statue of King Constantine I, by Italian sculptor Francesco Parigi.
In 1952, the statue of Athena the Defender was placed in memory of soldiers from Britain, Australia and New Zealand who have fallen in Greece. Sculpted by Vassos Falireas, it is a moving tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives for freedom.
In 1981, a monument to the Sacred Band by sculptor Nikolas Valakas was added and a number of other sculptures stand throughout the park.
