The Veakeion Municipal Theatre is an open-air, summer theatre that sits 87 metres above sea level. Opened in 1969, the theatre was named after Skylitsis, the city’s mayor, who was appointed arbitrarily by the military junta of 1967.

In 1976 the theatre was renamed Veakeio, in honour of the great actor and fighter for democracy, Emilios Veakis (1884-1951).

Today, with its stunning view of the Saronic Gulf, the summer theatre stages many of the city’s cultural and artistic events.
