This partially covered outdoor market, opposite the Monastiraki Metro Station, is a true Athenian landmark. Originally named after Noah Youssouroum, a 19th-century Jewish trash merchant, it is now called the Flea Market. Interestingly, one of Youssouroum’s descendants was elected president of the Junk Merchants Guild, which was established in 1922.

The area around Monastiraki has been the trade and financial centre of the city since ancient times. As such it has been home to the Agora, the Forum, the Wheat Market and the Old Market at various stages of its life.

Today, most of the shops on Ifestou Street sell new products, while those peddling used items sell their goods in Abyssinias Square.
