Built in the 1930s by architect Vasileios Kouremenos, the flats at 17, Dionysiou Areopagitou Street feature motifs favoured by the French School des Beaux Arts.

Determined to prove that he could combine classical and contemporary styles without compromising aesthetic vision, Kouremenos designed a small block of modern flats that maintains a distinctive Greek identity, with columns, marble interiors and decorative mosaics with ancient themes.

Although the building was declared protected in 1988, it was nearly demolished in 2007 when it was thought to be obstructing the view of the Sacred Rock from the New Acropolis Museum. But strong local opposition saved the site, and it continues to attract a great deal of interest.
