Konstantinos Parthenis is ranked among the 20th century’s most distinguished Greek painters. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1878, Parthenis first visited Poros in 1903 and returned to the island on several occasions. One of these visits, he painted the dome of Agios Georgios, the island’s cathedral, with a depiction of Christ seated on the episcopal throne and the ‘Beautiful Gates’, or central door of the iconostasis, with a depiction of Christ as the High Priest.
