The Methana healing springs are the result of intense subterranean processes linked to the Methana Volcano.
Writing in the second century AD, the ancient Greek traveller Pausanias claimed that these warm springs appeared after the eruption of Methana in the third century BC. Famous for their natural healing effects, these thermal springs have been used for slipped discs, arthritis, rheumatism, fractures, gynaecological and nervous system disorders, and a multitude of other ailments.
Attracting tourists and patients alike, the healing springs are located at two sites within the Methana resort, Agios Nikolaos and Agioi Anargyroi. Commercialisation of the springs began in the late 19th century and today a great many locals are employed at the spa.
