Archaeological Museum of Spetses

Housed in the 18th-century Hatzigiannis-Mexis Mansion, the Museum of Spetses was built between 1795 and 1798. Its decorative façade and expansive interior arcades lighten the feeling of this commanding three-storey building.

In 1938, the building was given to the Greek state by the last heirs of Hatzigiannis-Mexis, one of the island’s first nobles, to house the island’s Archaeological and Folklore Collection.

Today, the museum’s collection covers 4,000 years of Spetses’ history, including pottery, sculptures and coins, Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, costumes, furniture and embroideries. It also boasts an impressive collection of war memorabilia from the Revolution of 1821 including weapons, the flag of the Revolution and watercolour paintings of ships and figureheads. The bones of Laskarina Bouboulina, heroine of the Revolution, are also kept here.
